Indian Classical Music - Immortal Saga

A five thousand year old culture that is India. Right from the time of Indus valley civilization music emerged in India as chanting of sacred Vedic hymns. The religious chants evolved and diversified as history progressed. The progressive civilization. The hymns from Sama Veda were sung and not chanted.

The tradition followed was oral from guru to chela. The fist instance of written rules are found in treatise by Narada. It was Bharat Muni's treatise Natya Shashtra that laid down the principal of classical music. The theoretical treatise dates back to 400 BC. The classical dance form is codified in Natya Shastra. Since vocal and instrumental music was integral to dramaturgy and histrionics they find extensive coverage.  
The local folk instruments emerged as major classical instruments as time passed. Some influence was brought about by invading rulers. The sitar is modified form of ancient Veena while Sarod emerged from Rhubarb these two plucking instrument have gained popularity in India. 

The immense contribution of musicologists intensified and popularized music in India. Both the Hindustani of North and Carnatic music of South evolved into a comprehensive forms. The classical music of India is set into International fame thanks to popular artists who stepped ashore. 

Classical instrumental music and performing arts now find popularity in the West. With constant evolution and emergence of new genre of performers Indian music will emerge as a leader in demand. Light music and Filmi music all find their roots in the ancient performing arts of  the country. Hence it is imperative to learn the classical form as a strong foundation and stepping stone. 

With the entertainment industry growing rapidly in India training in classical music is important to carve a niche for your self. Best way of doing that is to join and professional music school as a trainee. Training improves your talent and enhances your skill.   

The gharanas of this country played a yeomen role in the growth of music. But they are confined to particular style based teachings. Professional music schools with good teachers or gurus are more diverse in their outlook.

Entertainment Industry & Classical Music

With the sky rocketing electronic channels and film industry the country's music industry is facing a big boom. The rising popularity of TV channels and entertainment business in general has created a big demand for music professionals. The high has come about not only due to various channels but due to fast changing lifestyle as well in India.

The popolarity has come from many quarters especially the ever widening platforms such as Computer, lap tops, mobile phones and what not. In short music has become more accessible with big boost coming from Internet - video streaming, MP3, digital media - CD - DVDs and more to emerge. 

The base for any music whether it is light music, pop and rock or filmy music is classical. Hence with increasing production in music industry there is new opening emerging from the entertainment industry in India. The demand is not futuristic, it is there right now as you witness the surge in rise of new comers who qualify for the best delivery. 

India has a strong base for training in classical music and performing arts. There a number of colleges or schools of music in India. Some of the modern music schools employ a training strategy that is more concurrent with changing times. The traditional gharanas stick to their rigorous methods of imparting skill to students. Their indulgent in light music is limited to classical forms like ghazals and thumri.       

The shift is more towards light filmy music and heart throbbing pop though ghazal retains its popularity. Hence the paradigm now lays more stress on creativity on light music that conforms to the demand of entertainment industry.
